This tutorial shows how to create styled vector effects on photographs. This specific style is heavily used by Brazilian graphics artist Adhemas Baptista famous for the Havaianas website design.
Open the picture you’ll use with Illustrator.

Now create vector shapes like the ones below by manually tracing the shapes or using Illustrator’s Live Trace feature.

Apply a color Multiply on the vector shape’s Layer Style preferences. Try to play around with the shapes and their placement on the photograph.

Blend Tool: Adhemas uses this effect a lot and it’s become a sort of trademark for his work, basically it is a Blend between two shapes and can be done using the Blend Tool.

Create two elements. They can be all circles or even a star and a circle. Then blend those together using the blend tool by dragging the pointer from one shape to the other.

Double click on the blend icon and you have the Blend Options, where you can edit the blend properties.
Edit the path with the pen tool. You can make curves by using the Convert Anchor Point Tool.

Refine the design or add more elements to it. Just go wild with your design.
