London 2012 Olympic logo must go!

Nearly 50,000 United Kingdom citizens have signed a petition demanding London’s 2012 Olympics logo be scrapped and changed.

The online petition was launched after the rough, pepto bismol-colored emblem was launched last Monday by former Olympic athletics champion Lord Sebastian Coe.

The committee has snubbed criticism that the logo, which cost 400,000 pounds to design, is "puerile" and "hideous," saying it is meant to be "edgy" and that people will get used to it.

But detractors have continued to flood websites with their own alternative proposals. By Wednesday afternoon some 50,000 people had signed a change the London 2012 logo petition, according to an online tally.

Many people have voiced their strong opinions that the logo is “an embarrassment and portrays our country in the worst possible way.” Many have also reported seizures after viewing an animated version of the logo.

Coe, Chairman of the London 2012 organizing committee and former 800 meters and 1,500 meters world record holder at the 1980 and 1984 Olympics, has defended the logo designed by the Wolff Olins branding agency.

"It won’t be to be everybody’s taste immediately, but it’s a brand that we genuinely believe can be hard working... And reach out and engage young people, which is our challenge over the next five years," he said on Tuesday.

"It’s not a logo; it’s a brand that will take us forward for the next five years."

Well, here’s what 50,000 UK citizens think of it so far.

Design Tutorial: Slim Fast With Photoshop

Here’s a fast and easy way to take 10 pounds off using Photoshop brought to you buy the amazing guys at PhotoshopHelp Blog.

The end result is subtle but noticeable and it won’t take you hours to do. Just remember not to overdo this effect or it will look unrealistic and distorted. You can "slim down" a person in a portrait with a non-proportional Scale Transform. Here's how to do it.

Choose Edit > Transform > Scale
Deselect the Maintain Aspect Ratio link icon.
Reduce the Width scale slightly.
Press Return or click the Checkmark icon to commit your transform.

Since you cannot transform a Background layer, you may need to re-name the layer first.
Double-click the name in the Layers palette and type in a new name.

You can imagine how helpful this little bit of information is for me. In fact I’ve now started Photoshopping all my photos from the last three years.

Revive The 1970s

Old Pic

So you’ve got a bunch of old school pictures that you wish to bring back to life?  The old Polaroid pictures losing color in the dank storage you’ve come to know as your bedroom closet?  In Photoshop can be found the hero that will save your entire collection (provided that all the pictures you have weren’t taken with a digital camera which in sense would be difficult to believe in this day and age).

In Photoshop, it’s all about the layers, much like the bad haircuts seen in this 1970s shot that looks like it was taken on set for the filming of Jaws (or Jaws 2….or Jaws 3).  Layers make it easier for you to clean up old pictures because you can basically chop up the picture into…layers.   From there, the process involves all sorts of photo filters, color balancing, and slight adjustments to certain hues.

Unlike what you see in the picture above, much more can be done to restore it.  Heck, you can make the guy look like he’s living the life in good old 2007.  The magic is in the software.

Web Radio Stations Goes Silent

You may have noticed that many web-based radio stations today including Accuradio, Pandora, Live365 and Rhapsody have gone silent. No, there no problem with your web connection; it's just that many online radio stations are deliberately going offline until midnight today in protest against increasing royalty fees. Organizers are calling it a “Day of Silence” and are hoping it will focus attention on the coming royalty-fee increase that could drive many online radio stations silenced for good.

The new rates are set to go into effect July 15.
