PINOY LOUD AND PROUD

Move over Rex Navarette... JO KOY is here to rock da house!

Yup! He's Pinoy and proud of it too. Jo Koy guest starred at The Tonite Show with Jay Leno last Jan 27, 2006. You can view his performance @ www.jokoy.com. To quote one fan... Jo "made the audience look like crying epileptics in a strobe light from laughing so hard." If you look closely at the video you'll see he even paid hommage to his motherland with a Philippine flag patch on his jacket.

PACMAN INVADES KEPPEL

Feb. 2, 2006 Noon – The whole Keppel building was abuzz with hushed whispers. Rumors began to fly around that Manny “The Pacman” Pacquiao was in the building. It probably took about 2 minutes tops for the rest of the building to find out. And it wasn’t long till the whole building was in frenzy. People started asking questions and hurried to catch him. What floor is he on? What room? Is he on room 705? No one was sure. Soon the whole fuss started to look more and more like an actual multi-level real-time Pacman game. Complete with a Pacman, cherries and ghosts. Come to think of it… It was in every sense a Pacman game. There was the thrill, the chase and plenty of screaming involved. The inhabitants of the building – slightly fazed and incredibly hungry lots in search of salvation. Salvation that is, in the form of piping hot Lucky Me Instant Pancit Canton; where starting to look more and more like the ghosts on the game. So off we went, searched and looked on every nook and corner for the elusive Pacman.

"Hey, they say he’s on 11th! Off we go."

"Sorry, he’s on the 8th. Ok to the 8th floor. Hi ho silver!"

I think he’s at the Japanese Embassy on the 7th. Bingo!!

It wasn’t long till the champ was bombarded with loads and loads of admirers hoping to get a glimpse of their hero. And we did it and have proof too. See….

In the end it was all fun we got to say hi and congratulate him on his latest win. Some even had the chance to hug him. We were all smiles. He then boarded the elevator and made his way out. We in turn, went back to our pancit canton and our cold coffees.

Celebrity Pinoy Big Brother

Summary

IT'S ONLY A GAME SHOW, right?  So why the fuss? Certainly it is a game show with a difference: the ten contestants are confined to a purpose-built house for a couple of days, where they eat, sleep, talk and wash under the watchful eye of Kuya. The housemates are then given tasks to do every week. The highlights are edited together and transmitted throughout the week to millions of Big Brother addicts. Every week, each of the contestants goes into the soundproofed Diary Room to nominate two of their fellow inmates for eviction. The decision on who will leave the house is put into the hands of the public, who choose between the two people with the most nominations. At the end of the contest the surviving contestant wins one million pesos.

They have no access to television or the outside world for that matter, and so to a degree remain innocent or oblivious of what the others are saying about them behind their backs. Conversely, the television audience is fed with the most salacious slices of the action or at least a prescreened version of it. In many ways its more and more like a telenovela than a game show complete with name-calling and tear-jerking drama.

This week ABS-CBN announced the new Celebrity Big Brother batch. A total mismatch of characters. The ex-matinee idol. The trophy sexy star and the charming oddball. I must admit that when they announced Budoy as one of the contestants I was absolutely rooting for him. I am a Jr. Kilat fan and consider him a truly charismatic front man of an equally talented band. BISAYA represent!

Background

The show, which originated in Holland and has also been sold to Germany, Scotland, Spain and America, borrows themes from classic works of fiction. The name "Big Brother" instantly brings to mind the materpiece created by George Orwell in his book, "1984". Big Brother is the all-seeing, all-knowing force behind the ruling Party which has everyone under constant televisual surveillance. There are posters everywhere that read, "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU". The Party slogan is, "Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past". It is such a powerful concept that Apple Computers adopted it as a theme to their ground-breaking ads in the 80's. Come to think of it.... It is not difficult to find parallels and similarities with the television program and the book. The producers who ultimately have control of how the personalities are portrayed and even their reactions on Big Brother. But why do we watch it? Because in some ways all of us are voyeurs… even if we try hard to deny it.

HAPPY WATCHING….

Why Women are Leading the Online Poker Trend

Poker has always been considered as a game dominated by men. But recent studies on online poker show otherwise.

The enormous success that online poker has had over the past months has turned the game into an internet phenomenon. Poker mania has taken over online casinos by storm and the online poker trend seems to have no end in sight! The game of online poker has developed quite a following with millions playing online at any given time of the day. With thousands of people joining every minute, there’s definitely plenty of poker newbies to feed the online poker trend frenzy.

As online poker continues to gain more and more mainstream acceptance, surprisingly, it’s us ladies that are leading the online poker trend. Until the most recent poker boom, poker was mostly considered “a man’s card game” with less than 10% of the players at a typical casino poker game being women.

In fact, playing poker at a casino or poker club is something many women, myself included, approach with much trepidation. My guess is that much of this hesitancy maybe fueled by the old macho male attitude to the game and its perceived reputation so infamously portrayed in black and white gangster movies. Personally, the thought of playing poker used to conjure up visions of smoke-filled backroom with shady mafioso-type characters wearing heavy gold bling with a half empty glass of whiskey on one hand and a Cuban cigar on the other. But online poker…as it turns out… is another story.

Online gambling industry experts have recently set out to investigate online poker trends that have led to the widespread increase of online poker websites. Two studies conducted in the U.S. brought out interesting and unexpected revelations in terms of demographics and the overall popularity and appeal of online poker.

Surprisingly, the studies show that over one third of online poker players are female with women being the fastest growing segment of the online poker playing public. The studies also revealed that an overwhelming majority of female poker players prefer to play at online poker sites. In fact, only 1 of every 6 women preferred regular poker to playing online!

But why, you ask? Well, for most women playing poker online provides them with a convenient and less intimidating way to learn and hone their skills at the game. Also, women tend to prefer the lower stakes available online than on the casino floor.

While men may gamble for the thrill, the action and "the sheer pleasure of watching others crumble in defeat", women tend to play poker as a means of escape. In general, men play to win and women, while still competitive, play for more social reasons. But lastly, one very important reason women cite for preferring online poker is being able to play the game from a safe home environment. This means having the freedom of playing poker at a time that fits into a woman’s already busy schedule. And believe me just the thought of having to get dressed, driving for miles to get to a casino, tipping dealers and waiters, waiting for a table only to have some guy vomit all over your new Manolos and driving back home after possibly a few martinis is just something few women find rather appealing.

So, ladies, if you're looking for a safe, convenient place to polish your poker skills, online poker offers numerous advantages over the real thing. Many women have already discovered the online poker trend. So why not check it out and try your luck?! After all, poker’s not just for the boys anymore.

The Pac-Manhattan Project

A Fresh new take on an old favorite

Sure almost all of us have played massively multiplayer online role-playing games or MMORPGs like Ragnarok Online and World of Warcraft (and an update on moi… I’ve finished the tutorial mode. WOHOOO!). But have you ever played an LARPG? Well, that’s Live Action Role Playing Game to you and me. And no, dressing up in a Sailor Moon outfit doesn’t count or does asking your gf to dress like Princess Leia either (*wink, wink naughty boy*). Enter the Pac-Manhattan project.

Pac-Manhattan is a large-scale urban game that utilizes the streets of New York City to recreate the beloved 1980's video game sensation Pac-Man. Call it “Extreme Pac-Man” if you want. This “analog” version of Pac-man is an experiment developed by New York University's Interactive Telecommunications graduate program, in order to explore what happens when games are removed from their "little world" and placed in the much larger and more complex "real world" of city streets and busy corners.

A Player, usually an NYU student or volunteer, dresses as the hungry yellow Pac-man. He or she (Mrs. Pac-Man) then runs around the Washington Square Park area of Manhattan while attempting to collect all of the virtual "dots" that run the length of the streets. The 4 Ghosts, also students, attempt to tag Pac-man before all of the dots are collected.

The Pac-Manhattan Project is such a fresh and unique (albeit, not entirely original) concept that people as far away as Brazil and Australia have expressed interest, and www.pacmanhattan.com is getting hundreds of thousands of hits a day!

But this game is hardly an “analog” one (oh well apart from the actual running, chasing and etc.). The players do have some help from a lot of technology. Armed with cell-phones, blackberrys, GPS equipment, Wi-fi enabled laptops and custom-made software designed by the Pac-Manhattan Team; Pac-man and ghosts are tracked from a central location looking more like a NASA Command Center than makeshift base of operation where the game is digitally recorded and broadcasted over the internet to viewers around the world.

More amazing still is the fact that the Pac-Manhattan project has attracted a “cultist” following (by cultist… I mean, in a nice way) with fans queuing in line to take part in this year’s game.

It would be great to have something like this here in Cebu. A charity event of sort like the Queen City run would do nicely. In fact, it makes for a great Team Building exercise because it teaches you a great deal about good communication skills and how to function as a seamless unit. Plus you get your hands on some pretty cool gadgets.

Just one suggestion guys, if you don’t mind… get better-looking costumes next time…. :D

Cheers

HASTA LA VISTA?

Earlier this week, Microsoft Big Kahuna Bill Gates gave the public a glimpse of the much hyped Windows Vista OS.  All this in an effort to generate more buzz for the much-awaited successor to the XP due at the end of the year.

MacLive.net writes. "Any Mac users who watched the Keynote were likely unimpressed."

If so, is this the case with the user who created the following video? Is Vista unique? You decide.

Hmmmm... ironically, Mac is partially owned by Microsoft.

Mac users face first Apple virus

Apple users today woke up to find a warning. A new kind of worm called Leap-A or Oomp-A has been wrecking havoc on Apple PCs all over the globe via the instant messaging program iChat and other methods. Unlike Microsoft’s Windows OS, which commands more than 90% of the PC market and face as many as 200 virus threats a day, the Leap-A worm is considered a first for the Apple Mac OS X platform. The worm (or Trojan as some argue) attacks by posing as a series of pictures which, when opened, allows the worm to infect and ultimately implant itself in other programs.

Experts also believe that the recent popularity of the company's iPod music player could have spurred the arrival of Leap-A. At this point it’s still not clear if the malware [malicious software] is truly self-propagating. This ultimately would mean a bigger problem for Apple.

According to Graham Cluley of Anti-Virus company Sophos "The Leap-A worm isn't in itself a significant threat, but it should act as a helpful reminder that malware can be written for any computer,"

The bad news is that this virus could signal an influx of viruses and worms aimed at Apple’s OS. The good news however, is that most people don't believe it will ever be as big a problem as the one Microsoft Windows faces.

Apple has responded by issuing an update to fix several software loopholes in OS X, but the company, some say, could have been a little clearer about what exactly those problems might entail. You can download the patch here.

Recent updates have unearthed a new Mac worm known as Inqtana. The worm speads itself via bluetooth.

For more details on the worm visit Charles Arthur’s blog, the editor of Technology Guardian, here.

What' News with PODD Corp.

Last January 16, 2005, Philippine Offshore Design and Development Corp. (PODD Corp.) celebrated its first year anniversary with an art exhibit entitled “panagtagbo”. ‘panagtagbo” is a cebuano word for “convergence”. The event marked a gathering of minds, talent and art lovers alike and showcased both a “traditional” and a digital art pieces. The images and artworks featured the collections of Cebu’s best and upcoming artists. The works of multi-awarded painters Nunelucio Alvarado, Florencio Cinco and sculptor Dr. Jet Florendo dramatically intermingled with those of PODD Corp.’s own talented digital artists.

The “panagtagbo” exhibit is only the first of many activities that Philippine Offshore Design and Development has planned for the coming years to reaffirm its commitment to the Cebuano people. In an interview with Cebu Daily News last January 25, PODD Corp. General Manager Christine Rom spoke of the Cebuano’s comparative advantage over others in the fields of web design, development and graphic arts. “Cebu has the creative skills needed to tap the growing demand for web designers, artists, writers and developers [in the world market].” Ms. Rom called for Cebu to develop its creative manpower with an emphasis on tapping this specific IT sector as well as calling for much needed government support.

It’s a common knowledge that India ranks highest in the outsourcing of software and software architecture development. Asian countries like China, India and the Philippines are the back offices of major Fortune 500 companies. In fact, I.T. and Outsourcing businesses are said to have a huge contribution in raising India’s growth rate to 9 percent last year. While I.T Outsourcing growth in the Philippines and more specifically Cebu has more or less focused on Customer Support Centers or Call Centers, there is a great need to diversify outsourcing services offered if the Philippines sees itself at par with growing economic tigers India and China. Some people believe that it won’t be long till the Philippines catch up and convince the world market of our enormous potential. So it is crucial for the private and public sector to come together and build on this possibility.

Going back to the “panagtagbo” exhibit, one of the most memorable highlights of the evening was when Honorable Cebu City Vice-Mayor Mike Rama gave an inspiring speech about the significance of Cebuano Arts and Culture. In his speech he talked his passion for the arts. But most of all, he talked about the importance and value of art in Cebu’s culture, history and its progress – past, present and future while stressing the value of supporting events that foster the Cebuano mind – our most valuable asset.

To quote the artist, historian and educator Heather Becker, “Art is a narrative and tells a lot of personal stories. If we don't try to save the history of our culture, of our communities, we lose that forever.” And in this case, Art is not only part of our culture; it may as well be the key to our future.
